This step test is a method to estimate VO2 max by measuring heart rate after 3 minutes of measured effort of stepping up on 3 or 4 boxes. By extending a line through heart rate as the y axis of a graph to max heart rate of the athlete, then dropping a perpendular to the x axis, which measure VO2, you get an estimater of VO2 max. There are other ways to do this, but we find this is space efficient and can be done with just four boxes, a timer, and a metronome for the pace. We mostly use 30 steps per minute, but other paces can be used.
